City Link Sponsored Walk

Pennington Flash, near Wigan

April 2009

Friends and colleagues of Denise Barr were keen to support Pancreatic Cancer Research after her death at the age of 45 in 2008. Denise was a highly popular General Manager at the City Link Business Support Centre in Newton-le-Willows, Warrington.

Colleague and friend Tracie Claire suggested a sponsored walk on the Sunday closest to Denise's April birthday. Some weeks before the walk, lots of other fundraising events were organised in the office, coordinated by Iris Forber and Jane Rowlinson, including making hot cross buns for staff, Easter Hampers raffle, and starting a slimming club with penalties to pay for weight gain.

The walk took place on Sunday 26 April at Pennington Flash Country Park, a favourite spot for Denise and husband Graham. 117 walkers took part, including members of Denise's family as well as work colleagues and friends. Iris told us afterwards, "Well, what a day! It was FANTASTIC! The weather was perfect, sunshine all the way. It was a huge success because it became a real family day out, some people even bringing along their dogs. We know Denise would have loved it! Work colleagues around the country have supported the walk and we will now make this an annual event."
