Instead of asking for wedding presents when they were getting married, Helen and Geoff Govey decided to ask friends to donate to charity instead. Helen wrote, explaining "I am getting married in September and I lost my grandfather Arthur Williams to pancreatic cancer in January. Geoff's brother Andy has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer as well. Instead of asking for presents, we would rather ask people to make donations to your organisation as we have been together for several years and have no need of a wedding list."
Writing to us afterwards , Helen told us, "We got married on September 14th. We went to Las Vegas and were married by 'Elvis'. It was a wonderful day and such good fun. Sadly, though, Geoff's brother died on our wedding day, something that his family kept from us until we returned home."

£1,205 |
|
In the past, Lili Man and Yasmin Mithani, together with colleagues at the Finchley Memorial Hospital, London have taken over the canteen and organised an annual lunch of ethnic dishes for staff and visitors to raise funds for various charities. This year, the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund was chosen, as Lili's husband had been diagnosed with the disease.
In addition to the huge array of mouth-watering dishes produced by the dedicated team of helpers, there were framed prints, hand-made bags, chutneys and donated gifts for sale. From these and a raffle, a grand total of £1,205 was raised. Lili confirmed afterwards that it was a record sum - "For us it was a very fruitful day. I am always
amazed at the generosity of people".

Simon Fell ran the Bristol Half Marathon one year after he had a knee operation, as a test of the surgeon's handiwork, the physio's advice - not mention his own resilience!
It was also just over a year since his father-in-law, Dave Danbury, died of pancreatic cancer.
We got a message from his wife Trudie after the race: "1 hour 49 minutes! Both knees intact, and overall he survived the 13.1 miles and is still able to walk round the house this evening".

Bryn Jones's father, sister and close friend all died of pancreatic cancer. Bryn decided to use a planned 300mile cycling trip from Bordeaux to the Mediterranean with friend Phil to seek sponsorship, to help provide direct funds for pancreatic cancer research.
Their departure from the Atlantic at Bordeaux was in a cloudburst. But eleven days and 315 miles later, under a scorching sun and cloudless sky, they successfully reached their destination of Gruissan to dip toes into the Mediterranean.
The final total raised was £1066. Bryn commented "Not bad considering it was done in some haste. Several of the emailed appeals went out from internet cafes we managed to find when actually on the road!"

Kieran Smith and his father Kevin undertook a 1,000 mile cycling trek from London Bridge to Bologna. Kieran told us "I'm doing this for the hell of it and to raise some much needed cash for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. My mum died in November 2005 and we want to help fund research into beating this little known but devastating disease. We start pedalling from London Bridge toward the coast on 5th August. The route will take us through France, up and over the Alps, across Switzerland and finally to Bologna, Italy…all by 31st August. At this point, I fly home, leaving my dad to carry on down Italy, into Greece and then through Turkey!"
"The weight of my fully packed bike means that even a gentle slope gets the thighs burning, so the Alps are going to be a real challenge."

Denise Foster organised a Barn Dance and Buffet to raise funds for the charity in memory of her husband Steve. Aided by lots of helpers, the event was a great success, raising nearly £6,000. "I was delighted", said Denise. "The evening was well supported and everyone had a brilliant night. They really got into the barn dance spirit with their check shirts, denims, sheriff's holsters and so on."

Dave and Paul Candlin, Jon Harrison and Russell Lowe took part in the Ironbridge Half Marathon to raise money in memory of their long-standing friend Simon Edwards, who died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 49.
Russell wrote to tell us of their success - "Well, it's finally all over after 82 hard training days! The race went well for all of us...eventually!! Dave came in at 1:39:47. Paul bettered his time from last year with a time of 1:56:50, and I came in at 1:59:34, one minute better than last year. The hero of the day was Jon who, despite a sore ankle, completed his first Half Marathon in a very respectable 2:15:54."

Skydive - Rosie Guthrie + dad |
Maidstone |
£972 |
|
Rosie Guthrie and her dad Steve Barfield decided they wanted to do something exciting and a bit different for Rosie's 18th birthday celebrations. Some kind of parachute jump was discussed. As well as providing a challenge, Steve and Rosie saw this as an opportunity to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. PCRF was founded in memory of Alan Blanks, a former colleague and friend of Steve.
As it was adventure they were aiming for, Rosie and Steve decided on an accelerated freefall jump, which involves a full day's ground training before skydiving solo from 10,000 feet.
Their approach to sponsorship-seeking was equally bold. A vaguely addressed letter to Jimmy Savile resulted in a cheque for £100. Reporting on their experience afterwards, Steve wrote - "Rosie and I really enjoyed our day. You can read all about it at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/barfblog/jumpStory.html. Turn the sound on for the freefall page and see if you can read it in the time it takes to fall one mile."

He wrote to say, "I've always wanted to do a run for charity, but somehow never managed to get round to it. This seemed like the ideal opportunity to start." Completing his debut charity run in 1 hour 43 minutes and raising £1,169 seems to have given him the taste - "This was my first race but I think I'll do another one in the near future and maybe raise some more money for PCRF."

Julian's son, Peter Burrell, continued the family's support by undertaking the Thames Meander in February 2005. This is not the gentle stroll the event's name suggests, but a gruelling 54 mile cross-country run between Reading and London. Sponsorship of Peter raised £10,000.
