Clinical Nurse Specialist, Jenny Merry, is climbing 5,895 meters up Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for the charity Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

Jenny is a Pancreatic Hepatic and Bilary Clinical Nurse Specialist at University Hospital, Coventry and is climbing the dizzying heights of Kilimanjaro for a cause close to her heart.

She hopes her climb next year will raise awareness amongst staff, patients and the public about pancreatic cancer. She also hopes to raise lots of money for vital research into this disease.

Jenny said about her climb: “7,600 people die of pancreatic cancer every year in the UK, with only 3% of those diagnosed with the disease surviving five years or more. This statistic has barely changed in 30 years. The reason for these shocking figures is because 90% of people do not experience symptoms of the disease until the cancer has spread and then it is too late to offer potentially curative surgery.

“This is why I am doing this climb and why it is so important to raise money for research into how healthcare professionals can identify this disease in its earlier stages. My chosen charity is the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund which is dedicated to supporting research to improve diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer. It is also the only national charity that exclusively funds research into pancreatic cancer throughout the UK.”

November is Pancreatic Awareness Month and Jenny and the rest of the Pancreatic Cancer Specialist Team will be raising awareness of the disease as part of a national campaign as well as raising money for Jenny’s climb. There will be information available for staff, patients and visitors in the Health Information Centre on the Ground floor of University Hospital in the week commencing the 21st November.

The Digestive Tract Cancer Support Group (known as the GUT group) for Coventry and Warwickshire who are a patient support group has already donated £1000 for Jenny’s climb in October. This group meet every first Thursday of the month at University Hospital Coventry and offer support to those who have had cancer of the digestive tract and their carers. Jenny is also being supported in her fundraising by the Coventry Freemen’s Guild.
