Plymouth charity evening to aid pancreatic cancer research (crazy shirts optional)

30 September 2013

The Sullivan family from Plymouth are holding a fun-packed charity evening on 02 November to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

The fundraiser is being held in memory of Michael Sullivan,  from Hartley Vale (pictured above with wife Ronnie), who died from pancreatic cancer aged 64 in November 2011 - just 7 months after he was diagnosed.  Tragically, three generations of the Sullivan family have been affected by pancreatic cancer, with Michael’s mother and grandmother also succumbing to the disease.

Hosted at the New Continental Hotel in Plymouth city centre from 6.30pm, tickets cost £35 and include a 2-course meal, live band entertainment, casino tables plus an auction and raffle. Prizes include a holiday weekend, a tour of the Black Friars gin distillery, football and rugby match tickets, plus family tickets to a range of attractions - all donated by local businesses and friends.

Says Ronnie, Michael’s widow: “It’s going to be a fantastic evening with lots going on! We decided to hold an evening event because Mike was hugely sociable and loved things like this, he never needed to be asked twice, in fact he’d have been first to buy tickets! Mike also loved getting dressed up for events and he had a large collection of dress shirts with crazy patterns on the back!”

Michael and Ronnie married when Ronnie was 18 and he was 22. After spending 23 years in the Navy, Michael worked as a laboratory supervisor for the National Blood Service, right up until his diagnosis.

“It’s hard to describe just how much we all miss him,” says daughter-in-law Emily, who’s helping to organise the event. “Mike had such a big personality, always laughing, and was a joy to be around. Although Mike and Ronnie had 42 years together, they should have had many more than this. It’s a constant source of sadness that he never got to meet his first grandchild, our son Henry. He’d been so excited about becoming a granddad but died just a few months before Henry was born."

She added: “The statistics for pancreatic cancer are shocking, and with three generations of our family already affected, this is something that worries us enormously, both for my husband Barry and for our little boy. So we’re determined to raise money to help find new treatments, and we’re definitely going to have the kind of evening that Mike would have loved.”

Emily and Barry are hoping to add to the £1,500 they have already raised for PCRF through Emily’s cake sales and Barry’s successful half marathon fundraiser earlier this year.
